Pending a contract extension, the Mets have acquired Johan Santana from the Twins for 4 prospects. As a lifelong Mets fan I am very excited by this move.

The Mets really needed an ace on their staff. While Pedro Martinez is still an effective and sometimes dominant pitcher he is really past his prime. El Duque is only good for about half of a season. John Maine and Oliver Perez may someday be the aces on this staff but they aren’t ready to step into those roles. This acquisition of Santana gives the Mets just what they need for this upcoming season.

Not only was getting Santana huge but they didn’t really give up much to get him. They gave up Phil Humber who never really panned out. Carlos Gomez who has yet to prove himself in the batter’s box. Kevin Mulvey who was just drafted this past year. And Deolis Guerra who is still at least a few year’s away from even pitching in the majors. With Santana the Mets now finally have a solidified ace and someone who can strike out batters on a consistent basis. He has a great career record of 93-44 and had a 3.33 ERA in the American League last season.

After last year’s disappointing collapse this was a big move by Omar Minaya. This showed the fans that he was doing everything he could to improve the team. With Santana the Mets should go far.
